16” x 24”, acrylic $150Conflicts in ideologies often lead to violence. After the attacks on September 11, 2001, I created several works of art. This was one of them. American flag images were everywhere in this land. Images of terrorists were held up elsewhere. Our symbols show us who is in the group and who is not. I wanted one that would not divide. We are all one family in this world. I wanted to portray something universal, something that everyone on the planet can look at and respond to in a positive way. Not being skilled in the ways of cloth, I painted this “Humanity Flag” on stretched canvas. Wherever we are, we can see the same sky. The pictured earth does not show any particular land mass. And the silhouetted handprints are found in rock art all over this planet.
